The psalmist Al Green knew something when he said, “Love and happiness; something that can make you do wrong, make you do right.”

Love and happiness are abstract nouns referencing an idea, emotion, feeling, or quality. If love is or refers to a state or quality of being, then love shapes what we do. It can make you do right. Love is a catalyst. Love prompts God to give. God’s vision for our lives is shaped by love. The same love that entices God to act is a model. It’s not what we say that proves our love but what we do because of it.
